Celebrating Veterans in Therapy
This week we celebrated our brave Veterans for their selfless acts of protection over our great Country.
Ms. Carter is one of our Veterans at Christian Care Center of Bolivar working hard to complete her therapy plan with our Broad River Rehab Team. She served four years as a Secretary in the Marines.
She reminisced with our Therapy Staff during her session about how women had limited rights in military job opportunities years ago. She spoke about how things are run much different now in our military. She proclaimed it was the best years of her life serving the military and creating her beautiful family.
The first female Marine was enlisted on August 13, 1918 by the Secretary of the Navy authorizing women to join the Marine Corps Reserve, marking a pivotal moment in history.
To learn more please search www.womenmarines.org. We extend our respect, honor, and gratitude for all our Veterans and active-duty military for their service to our great Nation.
Celebrate with our Broad River Rehab Staff in honoring Breast Cancer Awareness. Our Staff wore pink in October to support awareness.
Though more prone in women, men and animals can also endure this physical burden. Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in the United States every year and 2.3 million women worldwide. Regular doctor visits are essential in early detection of cancer. Treatments for this disease may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and other forms of suggested treatment per your doctor’s plan. Alcohol, vapes, and nicotine are factors that can increase your chances of forming cancer. It is suggested by medical personnel for women to get yearly mammograms when they turn 40 years of age.
The way to lower your risk of enduring this physical burden is to:
• Maintain a healthy lifestyle.
• Be mindful of your sugar intake because sugary foods and drinks feed illnesses.
• Get plenty of sleep.
• And exercise daily. It is very important to effective body functions.
We continue to extend our prayers and support to this cause, and everyone involved. To learn more on this important disease search American Cancer Society at https://www.cancer.org.

To help start this off, below are some fun, helpful tips for you to celebrate Family History Month with your loved ones:
· Unplug your attention from your phones and daily routines to give your undivided attention in creating a family tree and a timeline from shared past events by looking through photo albums.
· Reminisce about family occupations and historical contents.
· Share recipes and form a family cookbook, they make great gifts.
· Organize a fun scavenger hunt that connects your family history.
Celebrating your family history is a wonderful way to honor your ancestors and connect the dots of understanding your journey.
Bring the kiddos out to our place on Halloween Night from 4-9pm as we'll be handing out plenty of candy. If you would like to donate candy, please call Erica Parker at (731) 609-3900 or just drop it off at our Facility.
This week we announce Ms. Celia Bryant for completing her therapy plan and making plans to returning home.
Ms. Bryant chose Christian Care Center of Bolivar for her rehab needs with our Broad River Rehab therapist. She endured a fall in her home which resulted in a broken shoulder. Through her sessions, she improved her walking distance with a quad cane, safety during transfers and daily living tasks skills. When asked what she wanted to add to her success story, she said, “Well if someone wants therapist that are consistent in making sure you are doing your therapy then this is the place to be.”
Our staff extends our best wishes to Ms. Bryant as she returns home.
This week our Broad River Rehab Staff wore purple in honor of World Alzheimer's Awareness on September 21st.
Our Therapy staff has 32 years’ experience as a whole. We have each treated patients and have had our own loved ones affected by this brain disorder. Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia affecting 6.7 million Americans, a percentage of 60-80%. When most of us speak about someone losing their memory, we may also refer to it as dementia. It is important to know the difference between the two terms. Dementia is not one specific disease. Rather, it's an umbrella term for set of symptoms caused by physical disorders affecting the brain. Damaged brain cells that cause complex brain change make it difficult to retain and remember new information. Factors like stress and depression can affect ones' brain function.
At this point, there are no known cures for Alzheimer's disease or any other types of dementia. When communicating with people who suffer from this brain disease, it is important to speak to them in a calm, respectful tone with a kind, approachable demeanor to make them feel safe. And not all communication has to be verbal, you can look at photos or simply hold their hand. Imagine seeing through their eyes or trying to comprehend what you are hearing while suffering from this disease.
What if you were shown a fork and was asked what you use it for? You would say I use a fork to eat food with. But to the patient, they may know it is a fork but may not be able to tell you what you use a fork for. They have trouble distinguishing colors and distance. Something that maybe close to them may seem farther. Their perceptive on most everything is way off from the actuality.
Please join us in honoring people in all over the world who suffer from this brain disease. You can become more informed by reading information from sources such as Alzheimer's Association. www.alzheimers.gov
Our Residents recently enjoyed listening to our Chaplain, Bro. Charles Jeter, singing out on the patio.
This week Mr. Joseph Geanes is our Therapy Success Story. He came to Christian Care of Bolivar for his therapy needs after undergoing a knee replacement.
After the Therapist evaluated him, there was no stopping him as he worked diligently during every session with physical therapy building up his strength, balance, and walking distance. He improved his activity tolerance, daily living tasks, and upper body strength with occupational therapy. Speech therapy was impressed with his success in short-term recall and sequencing.
Mr. Geanes gave 100% in each of his therapy sessions. He expressed a cheerful outlook and was determined to reach his therapy goals and return home. He said, “I love you ladies and that young man in therapy. All of you have helped me get strong and clear my head from this surgery. I am so thankful to each of you.”
Our Broad River Rehab staff extends our gratitude to thank Mr. Geanes for trusting us with his therapy needs. We wish him well as he returns home.
It was a nice day to be out on the patio reminiscing about the good 'ole days.
This week we honor Ms. Mary Jane Rainey in completing her therapy program and returning home with her husband. She came to Christian Care Center of Bolivar for her therapy needs after enduring a hip fracture and surgery.
After a few days of therapy sessions, she regained trust in her mobility and excelled in her performance with a contagious smile on her face. Through her therapy sessions she extended her walking distance and activity tolerance. Her transfers went from max assist to stand by assist.
She told us, “I thank you all for having confidence in me whenever I did not. I was so afraid of falling again. I can return home now because you all did not give up on me. I am so thankful.”
In remembrance of 9/11, we’ve lowered the flag in our Veteran’s Memorial to half-mast. Never forget. (Photo credit to Angie.)
One of our volunteers, Donna Williams, shares her Service Dog, Shiloh, with Lonnie Umberger. Shilo has gone to Obedience School and enjoys all the attention from our loving Residents.
Congratulations to Ms. Deborah Spencer on successfully completing her rehab. After enduring a fall at home, Ms. Spencer was hospitalized for a hip fracture. She chose to do her rehab at Christian Care Center of Bolivar.
Ms. Spencer is a retired nurse, so she was fully aware of how ambitious she needed to be to successfully regain her functional mobility. Through her sessions with our Broad River Rehab therapist, it was obvious she was determined to do what she needed to get back home. She was an inspiration to other rehab patients.
We are very proud of her success. We wish her the best as she returns home with her loved ones.
Help us congratulate Mr. Alfred Hicks on successfully completing his rehab and returning home.
Mr. Hicks came to Christian Care of Bolivar after a hospital stay. He needed assistance in regaining muscle strength and activity tolerance to renew his safe mobility skills. He thrived every day working with our Broad River Rehab therapist in improving his standing and walking balance. He also improved his activity tolerance and walking distance without any needed devices.
When we asked Mr. Hicks if he wanted to add anything to his success story, he replied, “I appreciate everyone here helping me. But I sure will miss seeing you pretty ladies every day.”
Best wishes to our sweet Mr. Hicks.
